UKOOA Sustainability Strategy 2002 - First Report
4. Stewardship - Making Prudent use of Natural Resources
4.2 Design For Environment
  Commitment No. 53 - Infrastructure and equipment design

The wider upstream industry has already done much to improve cost effectiveness through new technology.  In partnership with our contractors and suppliers, we will examine the potential for improving the environmental design of future installations and equipment and review the progress that has already been made.

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

Genesis Oil & Gas Consultants were engaged by UKOOA in 2001 to examine the various practices and technologies within the industry, aimed at minimising environmental impacts and using resources prudently.  The most important time for influencing such outcomes is at the design stage of any development, when the beneficial effects can be readily assessed and incorporation is relatively straightforward.  Once facilities have been built, it becomes much more costly and difficult, because of access, space and weight limitations on an offshore installation.

As a result, Genesis have produced a best practice guide, covering four, high level themes, under each of which there is an assessment of new and emerging approaches, techniques and technologies regarding mitigation measures, with links to relevant designers, manufacturers and suppliers.  The four themes are:

  1. produced water discharges;
  2. emissions to air;
  3. energy efficiency;
  4. waste to shore.

The guide is in the form of a CD and is being made available to UKOOA's members and its contractors.  It is intended that it will be updated periodically to reflect new techniques and technologies, as they emerge.
