Commitment No. 30 - Earth science in service training (INSET)
Chemistry, biology and physics teachers have to cover elements of earth science within the National Curriculum, but often lack the support to do so. UKOOA is supporting a 2-year pilot training programme of practical demonstrations and experiments based on ideas and materials developed by the Earth Science Teachers Association. Trainers go to schools, colleges and universities, provide initial teacher training and deliver tailor-made sessions for teachers. This method of delivery is based on educational research, which has shown that maximising support for teachers in the classroom requires materials to be supplemented by coaching and practice.

Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

The pilot programme has been successfully completed, so much so that the Council of UKOOA has agreed to fund a five year programme (2002-6) enabling INSET to be introduced across the country. The following is a typical comment about the pilot:
"Brilliant INSET: did a lot for me and my department. I would recommend this to all schools. Thank you." Head of Department, Droylesdon.
The five year programme was launched at a reception at the Natural History Museum in early February 2002 and will be administered by the Earth Science Education Unit, Keele University, with teams based regionally. Website: http://www.earthscienceeducation.com/
